There are a number of UC Strategic Sourcing Agreements for furniture (steel, wood, ergonomic, dorm, etc.) that departments can utilize through departmental PO.
Use this furniture matrix to view current strategic sourcing suppliers, types of furniture they provide per their UC agreement, and some of the delivery options. (Contact info for these suppliers is available at the Agreements link in the previous paragraph.)
What to do before ordering furniture
Check out ergonomics
Office Furniture is something you'll use every workday for a very long time. That is why it's so important to consider ergonomics. Explore this topic through UC's Ergonomics Program website and be sure to discuss ergonomic needs with your designer. The showroom, located at the Tang Center , features demonstration adjustable tables, fabric & finish samples, chairs and ergonomic keyboard trays approved by the UC Ergonomics Task Force. (See the furniture matrix link in the previous paragraph to identify UC agreement sources for ergonomic furniture, and the Agreements link in the paragraph for supplier contact info.)
Carefully choose what you want
Departments are responsible for the final selection of furniture, so take time to decide what is needed. Once an order is placed, it is often difficult to change it. There are usually substantial restocking fees and freight charges for returns.
Plan space for furniture sizes
If ordering for yourself or someone else, make sure to consider individual needs to choose items that will be optimal for the person and the workspace. Consider questions like:
- Will the furniture you want fit into the space you have?
- What type of furniture is best for your type of work?
- Will you need to move your furniture in the future? You can answer these questions on your own or during the ordering process with a UC agreement supplier.
Plan for the purchase in your budget
Matching your furniture choices with your budget can be a challenge. You'll often get the most for your money by working with a designer during the ordering process.
Look for commercial or institutional grade furniture quality
The quality of furniture varies among manufacturers and cost is directly related to quality. Furniture you buy for UC must be a commercial or institutional grade to withstand the daily use in your workplace. Choose finishes and construction materials that will enhance the life cycle of your furniture. Always avoid furniture that contains particle board.
Be aware of furniture lead times
The average length of time to manufacture and ship is six weeks. Design services may take three or more weeks depending upon the size and complexity of your project. Check the attachment below "Managing Your Project" for more information on how to plan ahead.
